Unnati Handcrafts: Empowering Rural Artisans and Global Markets
Founded in 2001 in Melakamaradi , the Mithan brand has become a benchmark in sustainable fashion and ethical women's accessories. Originating from grassroots efforts by a group of skilled women artisans, Mithan specializes in eco-friendly bags and accessories crafted from natural materials such as jute, grass, and cotton. Their products—ranging from market-ready bags to elegant baskets—regularly reach high-end markets across Europe, celebrated for their quality, authenticity, and contemporary appeal.
The brand's journey took a strategic leap forward in 2018 with the launch of Unnati Handcrafts, enabling international exports through the Unnati Rural Development Society's export license. Today, Unnati Handcrafts is recognized for fair trade practices and is a torchbearer for empowering women in rural India, ensuring employment opportunities for 44 skilled artisans who pass traditional weaving techniques to the next generation.
The movement’s roots can be traced to the tireless advocacy of Father Jose Chenakala, a young Jesuit priest, and Gopikrishna, a visionary NGO mentor. Their early initiatives focused on skill development and agricultural innovation, eventually evolving into specialized training in fiber processing and artisanal crafts. Despite initial challenges, the women of Mekalamari embraced design innovation, resulting in collections that resonate with discerning European consumers and global eco-conscious markets.
Guided by entrepreneurial youth like Dasthagir Jamadar, the enterprise has diversified its product catalog to include laundry bags, stationery holders, and rectangular as well as round baskets. With monthly exports averaging one lakh rupees, Mithan and Unnati Handcrafts have positively transformed the livelihoods of their artisan community—enabling mothers to send their children to school, sustain income for ten months each year, and nurture dreams of a better life.
All products are now showcased on a dedicated e-commerce website, allowing for seamless B2B and B2C orders from international buyers. The venture underscores the immense potential of rural entrepreneurship, sustainable sourcing, handcrafted excellence, and women-led economic development, positioning itself as a leader in ethical export brands and global handicraft innovation.
